Cold runner vs. Hot runner?
1. Cold runner: refers to the part between the mold inlet and the product gate. The plastic is kept flowing in the runner by the injection pressure and its own heat. The runner is a part of the molding material, but it does not belong to the product. (The cold runner part is injection molding residue.)
Features: The advantage of the cold runner system is that it is easy to use, and it can also meet certain aesthetic needs well. The cold runner can reduce the part of acrylic or polycarbonate that is used for light transmission in the injection molding channel and avoid the visible banding effect caused by injection in some parts. Disadvantages of cold runner: (1) There is a lot of waste of raw materials; (2) It adds steps to the entire production process; (3) It is not suitable for multi-cavity systems.
2. Hot runner: As a common part of the injection mold system, the plastic in the runner and gate is kept in a molten state by heating. Because there are heating rods and heating rings near or in the center of the runner, the entire runner from the nozzle outlet of the injection molding machine to the gate is in a high temperature state, so that the plastic in the runner is kept molten, and it is generally not necessary to open the runner to remove the condensate after shutdown material, only need to heat the flow channel to the required temperature when restarting the machine. For this reason, the hot runner process is sometimes referred to as a hot header system, or runner less molding.
Features: Compared with conventional cold runner technology, hot runner technology has the following advantages: (1) saving raw materials and reducing cost; (2) shortening molding cycle and improving machine efficiency; (3) improving product surface quality and mechanical properties; ( 4) Point gates can be used without using a three-plate mold; (5) A single product can be formed with side gates economically; (6) The degree of automation is improved; (7) A needle valve gate can be used to control gate freezing; ( 8) The quality of the injection molded parts of the multi-cavity mold is consistent; (9) The surface aesthetics of the injection molded products are improved.
